This piece takes its name from the address of my studio in Los Angeles -- 2517 Pasadena Ave. The building was a former mortuary that was completely renovated and made into loft apartments, but some of the architectural elements remained. The front unit has a kind of radiating sun in plaster on its ceiling and a faux colonial fireplace in what would have been a waiting room for mourners. My studio was the area where bodies were prepared--slightly sloped floors led to drains. But instead of the location having a darkness to it, it grew a community of people who were full of life. Most of the residents were artists--painters, sculptors, costume designers, dancers and even a wold-renowned magician.
